Is it wise to give nature/landscape photos away for free?

Second attempt, first didn’t post for some reason, although it showed up in my Q+A!

I was hoping that I could possibly monetize my work with ad revenue because I heard that there is no market for this kind of work anymore (plus I spoke with a photographer who did that). But then I hear that giving it away for free hurts your reputation. I am confused and what to do. Maybe I should just give up freelance nature/landscape photography?

NO, it is most definitely NOT wise, either for you or any other photographer, to give away their work.

All that does is devalue photography as a whole and kill the market for professionals (and skilled amateurs) overall.

If a photograph is worth publishing or worth hanging on a wall then it is worth paying for.

NEVER be swayed by the argument that it “gets your work seen” or the “let us publish that for free and it will get you more work”.
That is total B.S. in 99.9% of cases.
What happens is that the publisher or whoever will just move onto the next photographer who will give their work away – ad infinitum.

There is a massive market for virtually all photography, all you have to do is look around you and see how many and where photographs are used in everyday life.

The problem with the market these days though is that people are giving their work away free or entering competitions which are effectively copyright grabs so publishers are getting away with paying a minimal cost or no cost at all for the images.
